A look inside a custom-engineered Instrument Air Compressor Building from Total Equipment Company.

Recently, a Pittsburgh-based midstream operator took on a major project to convert nine separate compression sites from natural gas to compressed air. For years, these compression sites powered their pneumatic pumps with natural gas for bulk fluid transfer, or hydrate injection and dehydration processes. In order to eliminate the use of natural gas, these systems are converting to compressed air powered devices. TEC was determined to fulfill the needs of this project requiring minimal on-site labor, a reliable installation outside area classified boundaries, tight construction schedules, plus commissioning and operating service support.

TEC and the midstream operator decided to install nine Instrument Air Compressor Buildings, one for each site. Each building includes two Ingersoll Rand RS Series rotary screw air compressors with advanced controls and communications, desiccant dryers with dewpoint demand purge control and zero-loss condensate drain valves. The enclosed buildings provide compressed air at a safe distance from classified areas, protect the compressed air systems from ambient temperatures, plus entry doors and removable access panels allow for easy service and installation.

According to Statista, methane (CH4) emissions have been gradually decreasing in the United States since 1990. By 2018, emissions had fallen to 634.5 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (MtCO2e) from the 774 million MtCO2e measured at the beginning of the reporting period. Methane is the main component of natural gas, and if released before being burned, such as from a leak, it can pose a significant environmental impact.

This midstream operator, with the help of Total Equipment Company, will now power pneumatics pumps with compressed air instead of natural gas at nine sites.
