Housing Construction and Woodworking Equipment Investment Drive Air Compressor Sales for ELGi

08/28/2026

J&G Machinery, a woodworking equipment dealer, reports growing equipment sales driven in part by housing construction across the Southeast. The company uses ELGi as its air compressor manufacturer of choice, citing energy efficiency, low noise and overall strong fit for woodworking applications. The equipment is supporting cabinet manufacturing for new housing construction and remodeling, along with other residential woodworking applications.

Housing construction across the Southeast is helping drive new investment in woodworking equipment and creating additional demand for the air compressors needed to run it. J&G Machinery, a Sanford, NC-based woodworking equipment dealer and division of Würth Baer Supply Company, says it has seen steady growth in machinery sales as cabinet manufacturers and other woodworking businesses invest to support new home construction, remodeling and related residential demand.

The growth is also driving air compressor sales for Charlotte, NC-based ELGi Compressors. The company provides the air required by woodworking machinery including CNC routers, wide belt sanders and edge banders – three of the most air-intensive equipment categories J&G sells. The companies have worked together for more than a decade, with J&G using ELGi air compressors in its own facility and recommending them to customers purchasing new woodworking equipment.

“We were looking for an air compressor that brought performance and value together, and ELGi was a good fit,” said Justin Johnson, General Manager, J&G Machinery. “They’re quiet enough that we can run one in our shop and still have a conversation next to it, and the efficiency, warranty, parts availability and support have all made them a strong fit for woodworking customers.”

North Carolina remains one of the country’s most active residential construction markets. U.S. Census Bureau data ranked the state fourth nationally for housing units authorized by building permits in 2025, with more than 86,000 units. The Charlotte and Raleigh metropolitan areas alone accounted for nearly 40,000 authorized units, creating a substantial pipeline of residential construction and demand for cabinetry, millwork and other woodworking products.

Johnson said housing has been a major driver of woodworking growth, with cabinetry representing a particularly active segment. J&G serves customers ranging from small custom shops supplying residential builders to larger manufacturers producing standardized cabinetry at greater volume. As those businesses expand production, CNC routers, wide belt sanders and edge banders are among the machinery investments creating additional compressed air demand.

Although the machines are primarily electrically powered, compressed air remains essential to their operation. It powers components including cylinders, actuators and drill blocks that control movement, positioning and other functions throughout the machining process. J&G’s typical compressor sales fall in the 10 to 15 horsepower range, although requirements vary based on shop size, machinery and simultaneous air demand.

J&G offers a wide range of ELGi air compressors in various sizes alongside its woodworking machinery. This allows the company to match compressed air capacity to each customer’s machinery package and production requirements. Johnson estimated the company has placed upward of 100 ELGi units during the relationship.

J&G also uses two ELGi air compressors in its Sanford facility to support machinery inspections and repairs, customer demonstrations and material runoffs before equipment is delivered. Johnson cited warranty coverage, parts availability and service support from Pattons, an ELGi distributor and compressed air systems provider, as important parts of the relationship.

“It’s one of those solutions where we can sell it and not have to worry about it,” Johnson said. “From the warranty to the support, parts are readily available when needed, and it’s easy to get a service technician in there.”

The partnership enables J&G to incorporate compressed air into the overall machinery package. The company identifies the machinery required, then works with ELGi and Pattons to size and install the compressed air system supporting it.

“We’re able to go to our rep and say, ‘Our customer is using this machine, we’re selling these three machines, and they need an air compressor to run it,’” Johnson said. “Pattons helps us size the air compressor; we bring the equipment in, everything gets installed, the customer gets training and they can immediately start production.”
